Vocabulary & Text structure
Q: when is figurative language used and to what effect?
The author uses symbolism and similes to describe the island. For example Golding uses a simile to describe the breeze on the island, "The breeze that on the lagoon had chased their tails like kittens were finding their way across the platform and into their forest" (34). He gave life to the breeze comparing it to kittens chasing themselves. Symbolism with use for the sun, " The sun in the west was a drop of burning gold that slid nearer and nearer the sill of the world" (43). This symbolizes the son of gold which is a cherished light and kind of represents safety, because earlier we found out a boy found a beast, "he says the beastie came in the dark" (36). So in the dark scary things happen unlike the golden sun.
Key details
Q: Which details support the key idea? look for the who?
Details that support the key idea is Jack when they were about to make a fire and piggy has the conch, "the conch doesn't count on top of the mountain"(42). He is disobeying rules all because they're in a new area this is foreshadowing for his attitude and outlook later in the book.
Opinions, arguments, intertextual connections
Q: what text support or refute the claims and counterclaims made in this text?
Jack says the group is not savages however their actions prove otherwise, "... we've got to have rules and obey them. after all we're not savages" (42). Yet I savage used to be in info for Indians who are hunters and paint their face, " he made one cheek and one eye socket white, then he rubbed red over the half of his face and flashed a black bar of charcoal across from right here to left jaw"(63).
